I recently picked up this Yamaha DT175c 1976 from a bloke in Perth, he had stripped it down to fix it up sometime in the early 80′s and had been lying in his loft since!

I have had the frame and cycle parts powdercoated, by P & J Powdercoaters at thornliebank, Glasgow, and as usual they did a superb job, I have rebuilt the front wheel with a NOS front rim and NOS spokes,

I’m currently waiting on spokes to rebuild the back wheel, forks have been rebuilt, along with the engine, rebore and new piston, bearings, seals gaskets etc, and done quite a bit of polishing,

I will update the gallery with some newer pics soon, as I am quite far on into the rebuild just now and almost have a rolling chassis!

Few of the guys headed over past Dunoon to Portavadie, Polphail, the Ghost town on the west of Scotland..

few guys on bikes, the Honda Dominator taking out for its first main run, Marty on his YFZ450 and Des on the TRX400, Me & all the guys on bikes, headed to the Ghost town, meanwhile Maty an Des decided to hit the hills.

Marty’s YFZ was only bought last week, this was it’s first run out after a little farting about, but on the run we found there was a botch job done on the underside of the front sprocket on the sidecasing where the gear peg shaft sticks out, turns out it was bust and badly chemical metal’d so oil was pissing out everywhere, so in one picture you’ll see that we packed it full of moss and mud trying to put a little leverage on it,

The TRX has just been fully rebuilt from the ground up, with new powder coated frame, loads of time went into this quad,

this quad should be up for “Quad o the Month” or something, its just a great piece of work (Art) on des’s part :)

the YFZ will wait till after the summer for its make over.. )

Hi Folks,

Ive recently bought 2 FJ1200′s I bought them quite cheap as they are in a bit of a sorry state, Theres a 93 model and an 87 model,

I plan to fix up the 93 model back to “Standard” and the older one (Which i think looks better!) I’m hoping to make into a custom rat/chopper type bike. I think the older 87 bike looks far better, with the alloy swingarm, antidive forks, nicer wheels with polished rims etc. Don’t laugh, but I’m planning on building the 87 bike with a zombie theme…lol,, thinking of building a zombie face onto the tank… Watch this space!

I have already stripped the 93 down to the frame, it was a bit of a struggle, a lot of stiff bolts, but, touchwood, i havent stripped or snapped any bolts so far. I had the engine running, cleaned the carbs and sorted out the wiring, I eventually got it running nice once i sorted the wiring to the coils.

Here are a few pics to show you how I bought them

Man,,, this has been the quickest build ever,,, 4 weeks to get to the point you can see in the pics below,,,, I stripped it to the frame, painted the frame, engine, wheels, swingarm, forks, discs etc. started to polish the rims, polished the footpeg hangers etc,, i just used halfords aerosols, but went over it with a proper lacquer from the paint shop using the airgun,, looks not too bad, and should be quite tough., got the chassis rolling again, exhausts mounted, subframes etc.,,

the throttle cable is kinda holding me back from bolting more bits on….. plenty to do in the meantime,,, still got the plastics to paint, and a couple of repairs here and there,, im goni repaint the silver colour on the plastics and tank, and re-lacquer all the plastics and tank,, should look minted when done…. hopefully in about 2 or 3 weeks…. come on the good weather!!!!!!,,, im hoping the second gear will be ok i haven’t drove the bike since i bought it in boxes!!, ive been reading a few articles saying how weak it is, hopefully the 93 engine should be ok,,

Roll on the summer!!!!

Heres a short video of the first start up video………..loads of smoke,, but this is the paint burining away from the exhausts and the engine,,, i had a wee bottle of wine to celebrate…lol,,, so if my spelling is off,, you know why…lol…

This is my 2nd LT250R and my 2nd project. This time its a 1989 Suzuki LT250R Quadracer.

Looks OK when we got her at Manchester in June but this isn’t a runner far from it! These are definitely not toys and are in the racing class, still used to this day on the circuits, very big in the USA. Should be given great respect and driven by an experience rider, will keeping up with today’s high end quads in the correct hands and of course great fun!!!!!

Stage 1: Analysis

Aug – Sept 2010

Hi all Im Des and I’ll be your host for this build. This is me with my other LT250R, this ones a 1986 LT250R. It has a 1987 engine installed. Much sought after engine because of the larger air intake and reeds. Now on with the build.

We got the next LT250R in Manchester after seeing it on eBay. So we got in a van and had another road trip. This one is a 1989 LT250R which came with a load of parts, included was the bottom end of an engine far from usable but with loving care and time it could be returned to far beyond its formal glory. Have a look at condition she was in.

The 1st pictures were took before it was sold to the guy at Manchester.

The guys bought it like this in bits then flung it together! And yes it was gubbed.  The 1st picture is when we got to Manchester and took the 1989 Suzuki Quadracer LT250R to be restored and stripped and fully restored. The quad also came with quite a few parts but I knew, I was going to have to order a few things to get it running

Stage 2: Strip Down

Aug – Sept 2010

The frame was in a sorry state and needed welding done on it plus the rear brake master had no where in the frame to be bolted on too, it was missing!

Wont be long till the frame returns from PJ the Power coaters.
All the parts are now removed for repair or replacement. Now the real works starts

Stage 3: Powder Coating

Update – 15/10/2010

Frame is now back from the powder coaters and looks excellent in the blue great job! You can see that the rear master brake mount has been repaired and looks great.

Stage 4: Engine Rebuild

Update – 20/10/2010 Time to rebuild the engine. Gearbox was shot replaced the gears 2nd, 4th and 5th both meshing gears. The cases were stripped back the aluminium and polished. All seals and bearings renewed no chances taking, gaskets all replaced too. Barrel head and Wesico Piston from the U.S. dome nuts on there way to finish it

Stage 5: Engine Mounted

Update – 25/10/2010

Got the engine mounted and the head arrived from the U.S. Stripped cleaned and polished in excellent condition no pitting at all so no hot spots. The engine has been just sat in not bolted yet. The wiring is being sized for the loom. The breather pipes have been install for the Keihin Carb and engine. I have also heat shrinked the loom in blue then covered it with a blue braided cable cover to finish it.

Stage 6: Rear Suspension

Update – 28/10/2010

Rear swingarm installed with pivot and shocker. Thinking of mounting the res to the side on the frame as I have installed an adjustable pivot link, can give it a low ride for the road. The air filter is nuts, massive I know but the only blue one that I could find to fit the large intake on the carb. Again everything polished, swingarms looking great.

Stage 7: Front End

Update – 31/10/2010

Started on the front end. Removed the brake set-up and replaced it with steel braided from a 660 Raptor including the front master. The dome nuts arrived and installed, an excellent finish to it.  The engine is now torqued down. The rear DG grab bar is now on with the DG Silencer fitted. I ordered a front pipe today, hopefully here with in a week.

The front end is mocked up just now but looks fantastic with the white on blue, alu brake pipe clamps to be added. The mock up wont be for long as soon as the the pipe arrives we’ll get her started, then its off to the garage. The LT250R wont fit through shugs entrance to the shed so the arms and axle will be installed at the garage.

Stage 8: Controls & Fuel

Into December now and there has been a few set backs. Firstly the axle carrier was useless the brake brace was seized meaning the brake caliper would not adjust back and forth. Only thing I could do was buy a replacement. An OEM axle carrier is stupid money for what you get and decided to go for a custom made SRP Dual Row Bearing Carrier, here’s a pciture.

The carrier will be installed this weekend as long as it stops snowing. The 2nd set back was our garage being broke into and my road legal quad got nicked. Managed to recover her yesterday big thanks to Marty G. Bit of a mess just had a call insurance are coming this week to take it away, looking like a right off.

Well back to the build. Added a cut-off lanyard and a twist throttle works a treat. SO we decided to add fuel and get her started. What a sound sweet as a pin classic 2 stroke ying ying ying ying. The tank is now on and all the controls are set-up. Front brakes now complete new pads and bled now the front end is completed. The back end is basically done apart from the axle carrier which will take 30 mins to install.

Des’s Restore of a 1989 Suzuki LT250R Quadracer Now Theres Two!

After my last build which I enjoyed so much I had to do it again and yes another Suzuki LT250R Quadracer.

This isnt a runner

These 2 stroke quads are excellent fun and go like sh!t of a hot shovel, point and gun it.

This one is a a full rebuild. The gearbox had to be replaced completely and I had to buy a cylinder, Wiseco piston and head from America as I only had the bottom end and a duff gearbox inside. Full seal and bearing replacement plus gaskets. Not to mention all the other new parts bought to bring her back to life.

The frame is now back from the powder coaters and looking amazing, PJ done a grand job on it, highly recommended and very reasonable prices too.

The engine is almost complete apart from a reverse thread bolt the holds the water pump impeller to the shaft. Have one order from CMSNL so be here by next week. For now its time to focus on the frame and brakes.

Loaded up with the Apache RLX 250 ax Road Legal, Des with his road Legal 250 & Marty with his Yamaha Blaster on the trailer,

We headed off to Gourock to catch our ferry across to Hunters Key in Dunoon, were we started our hunt for a good camp site for the night, without this there was no place to dump our trailer and get the BBQ on the go…

We headed North along the coast of Loch Eck trying to take in the amazing scenery all around us while trying to keep our attention on the road,

It wasnt long before we took our turn off for Ardentinny then not long after that we started to venture off road, onto the vast amount of dirt tracks roads across the top of the hills,

We setup our base camp, Des decided to made a few tweaks to his twist throttle & Change it to a thumb attachment, after a bit of messing about it wasnt to be so back on went the twist throttle,
once everyhthing was fine we left our basecamp and headed off to venture around the array of tracks, The scenery around this area of Scotland is some of the best you’ll get!

The First days ride seen us accend to around 776ft above see level, which i though was amazing, then the ride back to base camp was even more fun only because you knew were the tracks were heading and there wasnt much need to drop of the throttle around those little sticky corners, were the other side is a drop to certain death! Our camp fire that night was the best anyone could have asked for while camping, the slice rolls and coffee was on our tents and sleeping gear was all sorted, ready to move in the morning with little ease…

The morning after shug went to the shop which was only a 30 mile round trip, but the milk and fresh rolls were a god send, while the breakfast was cooking i took the blaster a little run through a field to get it warmed up a little for the day ahead, BUT 3/4 of a mile away were the hill dropped off to a water crossing my engine decided to make a rattling noise just as i reached the top of the crossing it cut out..Much pushing later and crawling along the track I got the blaster back to the base camp were i explained to Shug and Des the sound it made, but a quick fire up and it was obvious that my piston was fried! Gutted!

We packed up and decided to move camp to another location were we could get a better look inside the head, the car and trailer was loaded up and the guys set off with me at the back, when i reached the end of the dirt track, shug was standing there with his hands in his head with a look of disapointment on it, thats when i rolled up and he told me that his clutch was gone… the sound it made as the clutch tried to engage was all we needed to hear and we knew  our weekend trip was over.

In the End Shug had to be tow’d at the back of the trailer all the way to the boat and home were the engine was stripped down and fixed in about 55minutes… job done, Shug and Des was rolling again, The engine in the blaster was taken out and the head pulled off in seconds to reveal what we all knew, a large section of the piston had broken off into lots of little pieces this ment a whole engine strip down to get rid of any metal shards which could be still loose inside the engine block! a short trip on ebay got me a wisco piston for about 70bux, In the meantime this is a good situation to get things fixed and ready to go for the next ShugTech adventure………

ShugTech Visits Loch Thom on the outskirts of Greenock, to test out the new Apache RLX250, This road Legal quad, with its 250cc automatic engine will take you were you want to go about town or on the hill..

We travelled up over the hills of Greenock to the Gryffe reservoir then on to Loch Thom tackling some rough and hilly terrain along the way…
Travelling along on with me, was Des on the Suzuki LT250r Quad-racer, which has just been fully restored back to its former glory, also along for the ride was Marty G on the Yamaha Blaster 200cc quad,

After much dust track riding we heading back along the hills, and made our way to the Inverclyde MX Club located up in Greenock Donnies, were paddy with his Minolta Dimage7 SLR camera we decided to get some good shots happening,,,

Well Shug got his hands on another Honda CR 80 bike, the frame is already away to get powder coated,

Included with the bike was a few boxes containing no less than 2 engines, which were all completely stripped down to nothing,this gave shug a chance to start his magic, working on each side casing for the bike, he started off by de-greasing all the parts using a small toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies,

After a few hours, lots of de-greaser, some spray paint, the engine started to take shape,

after the paint had dried a little it was time to swap out those standard looking bolts, and replace them with the nice new purple anodized bolts

We had a trailer, in fact we ended up with 2 trailers.. We had our ride, a few minor adjustments to each quad, make sure all was well; especially with my 150 import, Shug re-done the valves, carb strip down, new exhaust port drilled and fixed, it was the test day for me, this day would either make me burn it or keep it..

Sunday 23rd February 2009

We loaded up the trailer with Paddys KLF 300 in front with the rest of the quads and Shug’s pit bike on at the end and well secured using a massive pulley clamp we were sorted.

We headed up to World of Golf in Clydebank, this is were we would meet Dougall riding one of Shugs
resent projects the Ram 100 quad in the car park at the rear of the driving range(just next to the five-a-side)

Once we had the bike/quads of the trailer we got kitted up and ready to roll, the paths around the back of the driving range offer the chance to get the quad opened up but not much, with hundreds of twists and turns along various paths through tree runs down gravel paths and up steep hills, once you get to the top of the hills just by the large radio tower thingy theres a small gravel football pitch, this is great if you want to race the corners or try some various wheelie action,

if you follow the paths away down to the bottom keeping to the driving range fence line you’ll come to a small burn crossing, well paddy thought it was small charging the KLF 300 through the muddy pit, but”!” the 300 dosnt have 4×4 so it ended up with us getting the toe rope out and dragging the beast from the muddy depths..

Once across & continue up and over the small incline keeping to the fence still, this is were you can get the quads head kicked in, booting it up this very long grassy/muddy path gets the dirt flying and tests out the suspension, I know cause i was thrown about like a used scud-mag, right up to the point were the main road is in view and you start to slow down for the tight muddy right turn at the bottom taking you right up onto another track, follow this all the way up and you’ll find a small 1/2 shape hut or (drinking den) that looks back down over the small valley and what a view it was on Sunday, with the sun just above the horizon making it a brilliant day for quadding…

My only wish was to get more pictures, but everyone was having such a magic time we just couldn’t be arsed.

oh and also for young Marty W to get something that lasts and dosnt brake with excessive force or use!
